Mentoring has a broader focus than coaching. Mentoring emphasizes both the professional and personal development of the individual. Counseling seeks to explore the underlying dynamics of individuals and their relationships. I will provide examples of each and explain why each form is effective for each scenario. Mentor – someone who has expertise in a particular area and shares that learning with mentee. Mentors provide knowledge, advise, guide, correct and encourage in their field of expertise. However, coaching and counseling are two, very different tools that managers use. Let's see if we can make this less confusing: Coaching is used to increase performance, when the employee is already performing the job well and needs encouragement to reach greater heights.
